Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - Monday marked the start of National School Bus Safety Week, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding both drivers and students to make safety a top priority.
Corporal Dallas Thompson says school bus safety is an important part of driver etiquette.
Parents are encouraged to remind their children to follow proper bus rules, including sitting quietly, keeping the aisle clear, and never throwing objects or sticking items out the window. Students should also be familiar with emergency exits, listen to the driver’s instructions, and use the handrail when getting off the bus. When crossing the street, children should stay at least 10 feet in front of the bus.
Motorists are also reminded to pay close attention to school zones and stopped school buses. Missouri law requires drivers to stop for a bus with its stop sign extended and lights flashing on a two-lane road, whether meeting or following. On a four-lane highway, drivers only need to stop if they are traveling in the same direction as the bus.
The Highway Patrol says everyone has a role in keeping students safe during their daily commute.
