Extreme Heat Warning Issued for the Parkland

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - A prolonged period of dangerous heat is expected across southeast Missouri, with an Extreme Heat Warning in effect from noon Saturday through 7 p.m. Wednesday for Jefferson, Washington, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Iron, and Madison Counties.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures during this stretch could produce heat index values up to 110 degrees, creating life-threatening conditions for vulnerable populations and anyone working outdoors.

Health officials warn that heat-related illnesses significantly increase during extreme heat events, especially when combined with high humidity. Residents are urged to take precautions, including staying indoors in air-conditioned spaces, drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding direct sunlight, and checking on elderly neighbors and relatives. Authorities also stress the importance of never leaving children or pets in vehicles under any circumstances.

Outdoor workers should take extra precautions, including frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises scheduling strenuous activity for early morning or evening hours and watching for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms may include dizziness, nausea, confusion, and fainting.

Anyone experiencing signs of heat stroke should be treated as a medical emergency. Move the person to a cooler area and call 911 immediately.

The heat wave is expected to last into midweek, with minimal relief overnight. Stay tuned to KFMO B104 News on-air and online for the latest extreme weather updates.
