Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - As Memorial Day weekend gets underway, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is urging drivers and boaters alike to prioritize safety while enjoying the holiday.
With increased traffic expected on Missouri’s highways and waterways, troopers will be out in full force to enforce traffic laws and assist motorists. Corporal Dallas Thompson with the Missouri State Highway Patrol says one of the biggest concerns during holiday weekends is impaired driving. He says if you’re going to drink, have a designated driver. The Patrol will also be conducting periodic sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols on highways to crack down on speeding, distracted driving, and seat belt violations. According to the Patrol, Memorial Day weekend often sees a spike in crashes, many of them preventable.
In addition to road safety, Corporal Thompson is reminding Missourians to stay safe on the water as boating activity increases with warmer weather. He says there’s one thing every boater needs to have onboard at all times.
The Patrol's Water Division will also be active on Missouri lakes and rivers, watching for impaired operation, speeding boats, and checking for required safety gear.
Officials urge everyone to check the weather forecast before heading out and to let someone know their plans, especially when boating. With a little preparation and responsibility, the Highway Patrol says the long weekend can be both fun and safe.
This year's Memorial Day holiday counting period begins at 6 p.m., Friday, May 23, and ends at 11:59 p.m., Monday, May 26, 2025.
