Missouri Lawmakers Approve Statewide Ban on Student Cell Phones in Public Schools

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - A statewide ban on student cell phone use during school hours in public schools is waiting on Governor Mike Kehoe's signature after the measure was passed by legislators.

The bill is aimed at reducing distractions and improving classroom focus. Missouri 3rd District Senator, Mike Henderson, says he supported the bill.

Some local districts are already taking action. North St. Francois County Schools recently sent a letter to parents outlining their new policy that will prohibit students from using phones during the school day starting next year.

While supporters of the bill say it will help curb cyberbullying and keep students more engaged, opponents argue that phone access is sometimes essential for student safety.

If signed into law, the ban will go into effect in the upcoming school year.
