Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - The Missouri State Treasurer's Office is urging residents to check for unclaimed property, as the state currently holds over $1 billion in unclaimed assets across more than 10 million accounts.
These assets include forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance payouts, and contents from safe deposit boxes. According to Treasurer Vivek Malek, "Many of us end up with unclaimed property. I want to give people back their money, and it takes less than 20 seconds to check."
Statistics show that 1 in 10 Missourians has unclaimed property, with an average return of nearly $300.
